Linda Nguyen relishes the opportunity to conduct research that directly relates to her field of study
What happens when people meditate? Are they able to stay present and focused or do they drift away to thoughts of what to cook for dinner? ALSO SEE:

“Little is scientifically known about what actually happens when people practice meditation. Current literature only shows statistics before mindfulness exercises and after, nothing in between,” said Linda Nguyen, an undergraduate nursing student.

Nguyen is currently serving as co-investigator on a pilot study on mindfulness meditation, a Buddhist practice that centres on the ability to respond to mental events with an attitude of non-judgmental, accepting, present-moment awareness .....Full Story

Nursing profession looking for more than a few good men
Bridgeton native Michael James, 24, has dreamed of being a flight paramedic since he was 16, when he first started volunteering at a local rescue squad. Now an emergency room nurse at South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Vineland, James still has his eyes fixed on that goal, and he has a very clear idea how he'll get there. Serving as a spokesman for male nurses, however, was not part of his to-do list.

The Institute for Nursing, the research and education branch of the New Jersey State Nurses Association, selected James as one of 21 men to be featured in a calendar aimed at promoting the nursing profession among men. And while he's taken a great deal of teasing from family, friends and co-workers about his new “Mr. April” title, the serious lack of men in the nursing profession is no laughing matter.

According to the Institute for Nursing, men account for only 5 percent of the 2.7 million nurses working in the United States today .....Full Story


Penn Celebrates Re-Naming of Nursing Building, Launches "Where Science Leads" Campaign

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing officially launches a $60 million fund-raising campaign, "Where Science Leads," on Nov. 30 with a celebration marking the naming of the Nursing Building for Claire M. Fagin, dean emerita.

That evening, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell will be honorary co-chair of a gala with Midge Rendell, Pennsylvania's first lady and Nursing overseers chair, as gala chair.

A $5 million gift from The Annenberg Foundation as well as significant support from Carol Ware Gates and the 1675 Foundation have marked the campaign thus far.

"We at Penn are extraordinarily proud of our School of Nursing and its impact on nursing education and health care around the world," Penn President Amy Gutmann said. "We launch this campaign knowing that we can - and we must - make a better future for nursing and health care."
