Foundation to Expand Regional Quality Strategy The new $115 million commitment will build on RWJF's national program Aligning Forces: The Regional Market Project, and concentrate more intensive resources to improve the quality across the continuum of care in targeted regions across the country. RWJF will work in up to 20 communities to improve the quality of health care by focusing more on coordinating care around the needs of patients, and reducing racial and ethnic disparities in care. "We want to have measurable and meaningful impact on health care quality at every level," said Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO of RWJF. "There is no one health care system in America, and communities have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to health care. Mentee Spotlight
Norma Hunt participated in the first cadre of NCEMNA mentees in 2005. Since then she has graduated with Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN, specializing in Nursing Education. She is currently enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner Post-Master's certificate program at the University of Memphis; expected graduation in August, 2007.

Employed full-time at the Baptist College of Health Sciences (also in Memphis) for the past 41/2 years she was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor of Nursing (July. 2006) .....Full Story

'Prolonged Exposure' Therapy Best for Female Vets With PTSD
TUESDAY, Feb 27 (HealthDay News) -- A type of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) therapy that involves recounting a traumatic event until emotions diminish is more effective for female military veterans than a more commonly used treatment is, new research shows.

"The study authors have shown that [prolonged] exposure therapy, which has been shown to be efficacious for other patients with PTSD, seems to be effective for this population -- women veterans returning mainly from Iraq and Afghanistan," said Jane Leserman, a medical sociologist and professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine .....Full Story


Nursing research spring lecture series set

UD's College of Health and Nursing Sciences is sponsoring a spring research lecture series that will feature guest speakers from UD, John Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania.

All lectures, which are free and open to members of the University community, will take place from 10-11 a.m., in 114 McDowell Hall.

The following lectures are scheduled:

*Blood Pressure and Flow in Arteries: Physiology, Pathophysiology and Mathematical Models, by William C. Rose, instructor in UD's School of Nursing, Wednesday, March 7; *Practicing with Evidence: Translating Research into Practice, by Phyllis W. Sharps, associate professor in the School of Nursing, John Hopkins University, Wednesday, April 4; and *Bio-behavioral Determinants of Adolescent Smoking Progression,” by Janet Audrian-McGovern, assistant professor of psychology in the department of psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania, Wednesday, May 9 .....Full Story


ONS Foundation Receives $1.5 Million Contribution from Amgen

PITTSBURGH, PA., February, 27, 2007----"We are both honored and humbled by Amgen's commitment to the future development of oncology nurses," declared Kevin Sowers, RN, MSN, president of the ONS Foundation in response to the $1.5 million grant award to the ONS Foundation's Silver Anniversary Campaign. "Amgen is dedicated to the battle against cancer and continues to stand with the profession of oncology nursing as a major partner."

The Amgen contribution helps lead the initial phase of the foundation's launch of an important endowment campaign that will highlight 25 years of funding nursing research, education, and leadership programs that have advanced the specialty of oncology nursing.

Oncology nurses are recognized by patients as key members of the cancer care healthcare team. They are most often cited as the person who knows them the best, looks out for them, educates and guides them through the rough spots of treatment .....Full Story


Reducing Racial Health Disparities Through Community Interventions

“We will no longer tolerate a nation with health disparities,” Rep. Donna Christian-Christensen (D-VI) declared yesterday at an event at the Center for American Progress. “It is critically important to the productivity, competitiveness, and long-term solvency of the United States.”

Christensen joined a panel of experts to discuss the continuing disparities of health care along race lines, and a new report from the Center, Community Health Interventions: Prevention’s Role in Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, that emphasizes the effectiveness of community health programs in reducing disparities.

“Health care access and quality for many patients of color is poorer than should be tolerated,” Dr. Brian Smedley, Research Director of The Opportunity Agenda, explained .....Full Story
