NCEMNA 3rd Annual Conference

NCEMNA wrapped up its 3rd Annual conference “Creating Research Careers: Your Pathways to Success” on Sunday March 18, 2007 in San Antonio Texas. With 236 attendees in attendance, the conference has shown consistent growth since the first national conference in Washington DC in March of 2005.

NCEMNA’s conference was honored to feature three dynamic speakers this year. Opening keynote address was delivered by the passionate Dr. Norma Martinez Rogers who stressed persistence, family values and mentorship as a success determiner. On Saturday, Dr. Howard Adams delivered a message on personal time management and networking among others as a means for attaining one’s goals. Finally, Dr. Cecelia Fire Thunder spoke about engendering bravery by embracing your fears and utilizing the vast stores of energy and spiritual guidance from our ancestors.

Mentee Spotlight
Debbie Jones is definitely a nurse researcher on the go! She joined NCEMNA as a mentee at our first annual Conference, in 2005 in Washington, DC. Additionally, in the last two years she has persistently pursued her doctorate at The University of Texas at Austin School of nursing, with emphasis on women's health.

Debbie works full time as an assistant professor at Prairie View A&M University. She has full responsibility for the care of her homebound husband, who after years on dialysis received a new kidney. Yet her goal has been before her. Thus she has completed one or two courses each semester, including summer.

These responsibilities have not caused her to lessen her professional commitments. She has been an active member of the Fort Bend county Black Nurses Association, the National Black Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, the Oncology Nursing Society, and the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer .....Full Story

NCEMNA Congratulates Mentee
NCEMNA wishes to conrgatulate Mentee Raymond Phillips who recently was awarded a fellowship by the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program. Raymond departs for Chennai, India in July for a year of clinical mentored research.

He is the first nurse ever selected in the history of the program and out of 137 applications submitted, 35 were selected as finalists. All 35 of the finalists were medical students but 4 (including Raymond). Raymond was the only finalist who was a doctoral student in nursing. We eagerly anticipate what wonderful stories Raymond will share with us. Raymond E. Phillips is a Doctoral Student at the Department of Community Health Systems, University of California, San Francisco .....Full Story

Grant calls for proposals

The following excerpt from a Robert Wood Johnson press release describes the overall objectives of the project: Finding Answers: Disparities Research for Change

Through the Finding Answers: Disparities Research for Change program, researchers at the University of Chicago will award and manage research grants totaling $5 million to organizations implementing and evaluating interventions aimed at reducing disparities. With this pool of funds, project leaders hope that health plans, hospitals, and community clinics will be encouraged to focus on racial and ethnic disparities as a priority in their quality improvement agendas.

Led by Marshall H. Chin, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of medicine, the team will also seek to inform the field about best practices going on with respect to quality improvement strategies specifically targeted at reducing racial and ethnic disparities .....Full Story
