Minorities fighting HIV odds

While the rates of HIV and AIDS infections among whites have decreased since the epidemic began, the rate of infection in communities of color continues to climb.

Lack of awareness about HIV infection, denial about risky behaviors, homophobia, substance abuse and lack of health care contribute to higher rates among Latinos and African-Americans, health department officials say.

"We have noted that people of color wait to be tested longer than other people do," said Bob Bongiovanni, who oversees HIV/AIDS programs for the state Department of Health .....Full Story

The art and science of nursing
Suzanne Gordon was sitting in her Arlington home, reading the newspaper, when she came across a crossword puzzle that infuriated her. She was especially bothered by bone section of the puzzle: it was a word that fit into a two-letter block, and the clue was "ICU [Intensive Care Unit] doctor's helper." The answer was RN.

But RNs (Registered Nurses) are not doctors' helpers in the ICU, says Gordon. "They are the ICU. Intensive Care Units were developed to provide one-to-one nursing care."

The puzzle reflects just one of the many misconceptions that the public, media, and policy makers have about nursing, says Gordon, author of The Complexities of Care: Nursing Reconsidered and other books on the challenges and future of nursing. Ginseng may relieve cancer patients' fatigue

Nelle Moriarty says she's grateful for new breast cancer drugs like Herceptin.

But like most patients in cancer therapy, Moriarty, 55, says the medication often leaves her exhausted and struggling to concentrate. Ginseng has been used in Chinese medicine to promote health for 2,000 years. A National Cancer Institute survey in 2004 found that 36% of adults use ginseng or some other form of complementary or alternative medicine .....Full Story

Black 'state' highlights racial divide

OAKLAND — Legislators presented a grim assessment of the state's African American community — a health care crisis, failed education and prisons overflowing with black inmates — at a town hall meeting Saturday afternoon.

And, in an hour of sometimes emotional comments, local residents underscored the urgency of the situation.

"We no longer have the luxury of time," said Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums.

The report — The State of Black California, commissioned by the California Legislative Black Caucus — spells out what most already know, Dellums said.

"In too many instances across the panorama of human life, black Americans face tremendous disparities in health, in employment and in juvenile justice. It's time for the issue of racial disparities to be disclosed openly and in the marketplace of ideas," Dellums said. "It now is time to confront that issue. With passion and fire in the belly, we most go about making changes in this country .....Full Story
