NCEMNA 4th Annual Conference

Dear Colleagues: NCEMNA is pleased to announce its Fourth Annual Conference, “Creating Research Careers: Setting the Bar High - Aiming for Excellence.” The goal of this conference is to introduce ethnic minority nurses to growing opportunities in research. The Conference will be held at the Marriott San Diego Mission Valley in San Diego, CA March 7-9, 2008.

NCEMNA was awarded a significant grant from the NIGMS National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services. The $2.4 million grant is for a five-year program to increase the number of nurse scientists reflecting the nation's diversity.

Mentee/Mentor Program: Funding for this program covers travel, lodging, food and all conference costs. This award is available only to those belonging to NCEMNA member organizations. These organizations include the Asian American/Pacific Islander Nurses Assn., Inc .....Full Story


Call For Abstracts
NCEMNA invites ethnic minority nurse researchers and students to submit abstracts for poster and paper presentation during its third annual conference. Abstracts of completed research will be considered for podium presentations. Research or work in progress will be considered for poster presentations. Abstracts focusing on expanding the knowledge base to alleviate health disparities of ethnic minority populations will be considered.

Deadline for Receipt of Submissions: Monday, November 19, 2007

Program Objectives: Develop an awareness of the state of the science with racial and ethnic minority populations. Appreciate the contribution of ethnic minority nurse scientists in addressing health disparities .....Full Story

Call for Mentees and Mentors
The National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Association (NCEMNA), a coalition of five leading national minority nursing associations, is committed to increasing the number of ethnic minority nurse researchers initiating, conducting, and maintaining programs of research by offering supplemental training and educational opportunities.

To increase the number of ethnic minority nurse researchers, NCEMNA aims to create a network of ethnic minority nurse researchers, develop mechanisms to support and engage ethnic minority nurse researchers at all levels and engage ethnic minority students to consider nursing research as a career trajectory. Supported by a federal grant from the National Institute of General and Medical Sciences (NIGMS), NCEMNA has implemented a Research Training and Mentoring (RTM) program that includes a matching of mentors and mentees, according to research interests and geographical location .....Full Story


When Minority Patients Have Insurance And A Medical Home, Their Health Care Improves

Providing minority patients a "medical home" in which they have a regular doctor or health professional who oversees and coordinates their care would help eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities and promote more health care equity, says a new report from The Commonwealth Fund. The report, based on a 2006 survey of more than 2,830 adults, shows that linking minority patients with a health care setting that offers timely, well-organized care where they can routinely seek physicians and medical advice can help them better manage chronic conditions and obtain critical preventive care services.

According to the report, Closing the Divide: How Medical Homes Promote Equity in Health Care, in 2006 nearly one-half of Hispanics and more than one of four African Americans were uninsured at some point during the year. In contrast, 21 percent of whites and 18 percent of Asian Americans lacked coverage .....Full Story


NLN Foundation Minority Faculty Preparation Scholarship

The NLN Foundation Minority Faculty Preparation Scholarship has been created to provide financial support to students in graduate nursing education programs who identify as underrepresented minorities and are preparing for the nurse faculty role. Two scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $5,000 each.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible candidates include men and women who are of African American, Hispanic, Native American, Native Alaskan, Arab or Asian decent; Caucasian men are also eligible .....Full Story
