|  NCEMNA 2nd National Conference | NCEMNA wishes to thank all who attended this year’s National Conference “Creating Research Careers: Expanding the Research Network” March 10-12, 2006. This year’s conference featured Dr. Mi Ja Kim, opening ceremony keynote speaker, and Dr. Linda Burnes-Bolton, President, AAN, keynote banquet speaker. Conference registrants were treated to two days of presentations, round table discussions, and informal meetings on topics relating to nursing research and career paths in nursing science.
The conference also marks the second year of its Nurse Scientist Stimulation Program funded by the National Institute of Health(NIH), National Institute of General Medical Science (NIGMS) grant. This grant provides funding for the development of mentoring relationships between 50 new nurse researchers and 25 professional nurse scientists .....Full Story

 Dr. Martin-Holland was an NCEMNA Mentee in 2006.
Martin-Holland is no stranger to the high achievement associated with completing a doctoral program. Among her many accomplishments, her teaching has been focused on the professional development of students entering the profession of nursing. Her course topics include Ethics, Leadership, Theory in Advanced Practice, Socio-Cultural Issues in Health and Illness, Pulmonary Advanced Practice Nursing.

| KANSAS CITY, MO. -- Maithé Enriquez, University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Nursing assistant professor, has been selected to participate in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Summer Institute July 9-21, 2006.
The two-week course will focus on the design and conduct of randomized clinical trials involving behavioral interventions. It takes place at the Airlie Conference Center in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Northern Virginia.
Acceptance into the program identifies Enriquez, RN, PhD, as having the potential to be a leading authority in her field.
Enriquez’ research is focused on the development of interventions to prevent and manage chronic illness in vulnerable populations. She has also served as investigator or sub-investigator in 13 national HIV clinical trials. Her clinical practice as a nurse practitioner has focused on caring for individuals with chronic illnesses.

| The racial gap seen in the outcome of prostate cancer among older men is primarily due to differences in socioeconomic status, according to the results of a large community-based study.
The exception is Hispanic men, who have the highest rates of survival, but a socioeconomic status on par with African American men.
"Lower socioeconomic status appeared to be one of the major barriers to achieving comparable outcomes for men with prostate carcinoma," Dr. Xianglin L. Du, from the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston, and colleagues report in the medical journal Cancer.
The findings are based on analysis of data from 61,228 men, 65 years of age or older, who were diagnosed with prostate cancer between 1992 and 1999 .....Full Story

WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) - Black patients with colorectal cancer are 20 percent less likely than white patients to be recommended for add-on (or "adjuvant") chemotherapy, new research indicates.
The finding comes from a look-back study that included all 17,174 black and white colorectal cancer patients diagnosed in Alabama during a recent 7-year period. Dr. Hanaa S. Elhefni, from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio reported the results at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.

The NIH plans to issue Program Announcements (PA) to reissue “Research on Ethical Issues in Human Studies” (previously issued as PA-02-103) in the spring of 2006. These PAs will solicit research project grant applications addressing the ethical issues that accompany the conduct of human subjects research.
In contrast to PA-02-103, which was limited to R01 applications, the NIH intends to issue separate Announcements for R01, R03 and R21 mechanisms. A description of NIH grant programs may be found at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/funding_program.htm.
This Notice is to encourage investigators to begin considering applying for these PAs.
