| Notes from the Editor | Communication is important in any relationship. In March 2005 at NCEMNA's first national conference, fifty mentees and twenty-five mentors committed themselves to a one year relationship with the goal of moving the mentees closer to their vision of becoming nurse scientists. The conversations that began as verbal exchanges continue now as phone calls, letters or e-mails of encouragement and direction. The means of communication are not as important as the fact that the communication occurs.
Mentors can serve many roles- that of sounding board, advocate, guide and/or partner. Just how the relationship develops should be based on the needs of the mentee and expertise of the mentor. No relationship develops, however, if there is no communication.
Mentees give mentors the opportunity to share skills and knowledge and experience and the joy of helping individuals reach personal and professional goals .....Full Story
